As a lover of photography and art I love to see them combined in the natural world to create something stunning.

Here is an exhibition of truly beautiful images of the New Mexico sky. Probably the most famous image of the New Mexico sky is the one done by Ansel Adams called ‘Moonrise, Hernandez’

A new exhibition of photographic luminaries at the New Mexico Museum of Art invites visitors to lose themselves in a variety of cloud formations, from fluffy to enticing to intriguing to menacing. Cloudscapes: Photographs from the Collection, opening Feb. 4, features work by some of the masters of the medium, including Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Laura Gilpin, Eliot Porter, and Edward Weston. Also featured are more recent images by Paul Caponigro, William Clift, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, and Jim Stone.

Is It Magic?

I just had to add this other article on the great jazz photographer Herman Leonard.

Photographs like the one of Duke Ellington on the right epitomize Leonard’s style. A style that he became famous for. When I look at this type of image I feel as though I’m there, I feel as though I can hear the sounds of the audience the beauty of the music. I suppose hat’s what the best photography is all about.

Feel the moment, let the photograph transport you to a time and place you’ve never been or are likely to go. Sheer beauty, sheer mastery.

Fine Art Photography Loses A Legend – Herman Leonard

It is with great sadness that I offer the news that the legend called Herman Leonard has died at the age of 87 in Los Angeles. Rad the full obituary here.

Leonard was one of my favourite photographers and I have to say a massive inspiration
to me in my photography career. His use of backlight in the creation of mood in those early smoke filled jazz clubs has touched many people. I’m sure there are many, many homes with Herman Leonard photographs on their walls. I know I have.

So inspirational were his photographs to me that in my recent exhibition I used backlight to give mood to some of my shots. Now I am not saying hat I copied his style – I may have tried to emulate some of his shots earlier in my career, I admit that freely but never cme close.

But without conscious thought, in my Ambiguous Misdirection Exhibition I have developed my own style of photographing the female form with that uses backlight and mood to give very distinctive ‘feel’ to each photograph.

Art London Returns To Chelsea

I came across this article yesterday about the return of Art London to Chelsea’s Royal Hospital, housed in a huge marquee in it’s grounds.Billed as London’s premier art fair and one not to be missed.

The idea behind the Art London since its foundations in 1999,  was to endeavour to marry “serious” art with a welcoming and friendly approach – not a widespread formula in the art world as it is often viewed as snooty and unapproachable.

There are many art lovers throughout the world who feel intimidated by the ‘ hoity-toity’ world of galleries and exhibitions, however this fair open’s up the art world and welcomes everyone with an open door.

Photography Exhibition Diary – Coming Up With Ideas

The Creative Process

Like many artists or creative types, when I’m asked about the actual process of creating something – the birth of a project, it can be difficult to pin point exactly when it all started as it’s never really set out in black and white.

You have a germ of an idea, a passing inclination or fleeting notion that over time becomes less ephemeral and takes form and quietly shapes up in the back of your mind. Seldom by chance, but somehow clearly and subconsciously the notion becomes an idea that then becomes a possibility and without realising it you’re in the middle of creating. And once again without a conscious structure a plan is formed and eventually acted upon. And suddenly an exhibition is born.

Well that’s how it was for me.

It all started because of a comment by a friend and a bit of bravado by myself. (Read the previous post to find out).

I’d already had a few ideas turning over in my mind and I always find it best to sketch them out as soon as possible as for me it’s very easy to forget them. I’ve noticed that ideas pass in and out of my mind very quickly and if I don’t record them they’re often gone forever.

Here’s an idea I had for one of the shots  (Sunset Ridge) for the Ambiguous Misdirection exhibition,

was some refining of my initial idea and the use of light including the type of light I used, the direction and the intensity of it greatly influence the final outcome. Sunset Ridge has
received lots of encouraging comments and I have to say that I am very happy with the final result.

My model was thoroughly impressed with the shot, trying to explain my vision to her during the shoot didn’t really work, probably because I couldn’t articulate myself well enough. However she was delighted with the end result.

Fine Art Photography Exhibition Diary

I was looking back over my diary at the weekend and as I read I noticed how naive I’d been when I began the planning of my exhibition Ambiguous Misdirection.

Going back to the beginning I was talking to some friends whilst looking at some photographs in a gallery. The conversation went something like this,

“Nick you’re a photographer why don’t you have an exhibition?”

“Yeah I will one day I could probably put one on now”

“Well go on then mister big mouth do it!”

” Ok then I will, you can set the date if you want mate” blah blah blah and so on. I’m sure you can get the gist. And there it was a date was set and I was in it.

Bravado

When I looked back at it I only left 10 weeks to shoot most of the images, get the venue sorted, the printing & framing done and all the rest of the stuff that goes with it. Yes crazy I hear you say and I have to agree with you totally.

The first thing I needed to do was plan the images or to be more precise come up with ideas that I was going to shoot AND then find the models.

I have to admit that looking back my Dutch Courage was fueled by the dreaded drink but once I’d taken on the challenge I had to carry on through.

In the next post I’ll give a little more information on the few days after my momentous decision, especially the realisation of how much I’d actually taken on.

Fine Art Photography and First Thursday’s

First Thursday’s is an event I’ve only recently come across, it’s a fantastic concept that offers the opportunity for people to get to see art they wouldn’t normally see. Sponsored by the Whitechapel Gallery it’s a chance for a people to get to visit as many as 90 galleries that stay open till about 9pm.

There are bars that show art, established formal galleries and performances all over East London.

Off Broadway is a cool and trendy bar that is showing my collection. For a chance to see some great photographs, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and have a drink on me – why not pop in?

New Photography Exhibition Venue

New Photography Exhibition Venue

This is just a quick update to let you know about a new venue that I am holding a further showing of my exhibition Ambiguous Misdirection.

Broadway Market is at the hub of of East London’s trend setting area called London Fields, and situated in the middle of this bohemian area is the excellent venue Off Broadway.
This is a really cool bar serving classic cocktails and Tex Mex food and a beer I’ve not come across before – Brooklyn Lager. It draws a fun loving eclectic crowd of mixed age range but generally artistic types.

I hope you guys get the chance to pass on by Thursday 5th August and enjoy the photographs and a beer or two. I’ll certainly be there!

The beginning of the female kind

On the July 13^th Nick Gregan first solo exhibition Ambiguous Misdirection came off the walls of Adams St Private Members Club after receiving great reviews.

The first of its kind at the gallery, the exhibition evoked the profound misdirection of ones mind, pushing you to look beyond the obvious and question what your saw at first glance like a framed alien on display as seen by the image beside this text.

Well known in the industry as a portrait photographer, Nick’s use of light and dark defined silhouettes captures the landscape of the female form introducing us to the new movement known as bodyscape.

As a virgin to the world of blogging just like many people I’m sure, I feel very ambiguous as to what is expected of me to write so I hope I have successfully left you wanting to read more and looking forward to my next dairy entry.

It was a really busy time over the last few weeks running up to the big day of my Ambiguous Misdirection exhibition.

aspects to putting on an exhibition; actually doing the photographs themselves, creating ideas, organising models, exhibition space, creating a guest list and ensuring the right kind of people are invited to the opening night etc, etc, etc. I seem to have spent more time on the ancillary tasks that seem to keep cropping up on a very regular basis than on the creating process.

I’m the sort of person that if I am going to do something I want to do it right, at least the very best that I can. Continuing on this train of thought I made he very bold decision to produce a book to accompany the exhibition – another added pressure but as the time to go to print drew nearer and nearer and the book took shape I can say without a shadow of a doubt how proud I was of the way it shaped up and finally hit the bookstores.
